Super Bowl, Neurology, and Group Study Wins!
Service Hours Completed: 0 hours
Cumulative Spring Semester Service Hours: 3 hours🎉 Happy Black History Month!
For being the shortest month, February was absolutely action-packed! The Super Bowl was here in New Orleans, and I’m still kicking myself for not signing up to volunteer sooner—I knew those spots would fill up fast! I could have been there!! Ahhhhhhh! 😩 But that’s okay 😌 there will be plenty of exciting volunteer opportunities ahead.
Despite missing out on volunteering, I made the most of the Super Bowl festivities and loved that the NFL Honors event was happening right outside my apartment! New Orleans always has something exciting going on, which is just one of the many reasons I LOVE this city! 🏈✨
📚 Tackling Two Modules
This month, we covered two major modules—Endocrine and Neurology—both of which were incredibly engaging.
For the Endocrine Module, I especially enjoyed learning about diabetes and thyroid disorders, as they are highly prevalent in the U.S. Diabetes, in particular, hits close to home because of my family's medical history, and thyroid issues are common on my dad’s side. Understanding these conditions in depth made the learning experience even more meaningful.
The Neurology Module was one of my absolute favorites! We dove into Anesthesia, Opioids, Parkinson’s,Alzheimer’s, Stroke, and Epilepsy. I found the Med Pharm section on anesthetics especially fascinating since Anesthesia is one of my top specialty interests. 🏥💉 It was eye-opening to learn more about the mechanisms behind these essential treatments.
📖 Mastering My Study Routine
I’ve definitely gotten into the groove with my study routine, and one of my favorite tools has been Kahoot! I love making quizzes and testing myself. It’s a great way to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses. Plus, studying is way more fun when you do it with friends!
I often study with Christa’l, Nuriah, and Funke 💖, and we’ve found that group study sessions are the way to go! When one of us gets a question wrong or struggles to understand a concept, we break it down, discuss it, and even draw it out on the whiteboard. GROUP STUDY! GROUP STUDY! It truly makes all the difference. 🤓📖✏️

King Cake Competition 💜💛💚
Our class held a King Cake Competition, celebrating one of the most cherished traditions of Mardi Gras. King Cake is a sweet, cinnamon-filled pastry topped with icing and colored sugar, often containing a small plastic baby inside. The baby symbolizes Baby Jesus, and whoever finds it is responsible for bringing the next cake!
To keep things fun and organized, everyone who wanted to participate signed up with their chosen bakery and flavor to avoid duplicates. We enjoyed two cakes per day over the course of the competition.
Day 1: Aubrey brought one from Cannata's, and Jo'Nae went all out and bought SIX from Dong Phuong's.
Day 2: I brought a Chantilly King Cake from Bywater Bakery, and Funke brought a traditional one from Nonna Randazzo's.
Day 3: Nuriah brought a traditional one from Manny Randazzo's, and Rhea brought a Praline Cream King Cake Cheesecake from Gambino's.
🏆 Final Rankings:
Dong Phuong – 1st Place
Bywater Bakery – 2nd Place
Gambino's – 3rd Place
I could absolutely see why Dong Phuong took first place—it was incredibly soft with just the right amount of icing. Jo'Nae shared that she arrived at 4 AM to get the cakes, and by 8 AM, when the bakery still hadn't opened, people were already banging on the windows! 😅 Now that's dedication! Their cake is so good they don't even have to make it pretty!
🎭 Looking Ahead—Mardi Gras & Beyond!
Two months down, two more to go! This semester is flying by, and I’m excited for everything ahead. I’m grateful for the foundation this program is setting for me post-graduation, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.
Talk to you soon! I'll be back with Mardi Gras beads! 💜💛💚
